A study by the University of Maryland researchers led by Dr. David C. Schulman of the Institute of Medicine (ISM) found that the dosage used by intrathecal baclofen (ITB) is ineffective in reducing spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
The results were published in theJournal of Clinical Neurology, which is the journal of the Neurologic Institute.
In a study of MS patients, the researchers evaluated the effects of a baclofen injection on spasticity symptoms and function.
They found that the baclofen injection did not affect spasticity in patients who received a single ITB dose. This was because the injection is a controlled-release formulation of baclofen.
The researchers also found that the baclofen injection reduced the spasticity symptoms in patients who received the high-dose ITB group.
“This is the first study to show that baclofen injection may be a safe and effective treatment for spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis,” said the ISM professor in the department of neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina. “The fact that spasticity is commonly reported in multiple sclerosis and that baclofen is safe and effective in managing multiple sclerosis may be of some importance. We now need to consider the long-term safety and efficacy of this treatment.”
In the ISM’s latest research on baclofen and spasticity, Schulman and colleagues evaluated the safety and efficacy of a baclofen injection.
The researchers analyzed data from two clinical trials on baclofen as a treatment for MS. The studies included patients with multiple sclerosis and spasticity symptoms.
The researchers looked at data from 30 patients who were administered either a baclofen injection or placebo every 4 hours for 5 days.
The doctors prescribed the baclofen injection and then treated the patients with ITB for 5 days. The researchers then looked at the spasticity symptoms and function of each patient.
They found that the baclofen injection reduced the spasticity symptoms in patients who received the high-dose ITB group.
The investigators also found that the baclofen injection significantly increased the number of intrathecal sessions performed for spasticity symptoms in patients who received the high-dose ITB group.
“The results of this study suggest that intrathecal baclofen injections for spasticity management are safe and effective in patients with multiple sclerosis, and are also a good option for patients with spasticity that doesn’t respond to standard therapy.”
In another study, the researchers looked at the effects of intrathecal baclofen therapy on the spasticity symptoms and function of patients with multiple sclerosis.
“It’s important to note that we have not included patients with spasticity who respond to traditional treatment, so we must not treat them as patients with multiple sclerosis,” Schulman said.
In their latest study, the researchers looked at spasticity symptoms and function of patients who received baclofen in the high-dose ITB group. They found that the baclofen injection reduced spasticity symptoms and function in patients who received the high-dose ITB group.
“Our study suggests that intrathecal baclofen therapy may be a safe and effective treatment for patients with multiple sclerosis, and may be a good option for patients with spasticity that doesn’t respond to standard therapy.”
The ISM will be continuing to study the effectiveness of intrathecal baclofen injections in patients with MS and other neurological conditions. Dr. David Schulman is an assistant professor in the ISM’s Department of Neurology.

Baclofen works by binding to the GABA (glucomannan) receptor and blocking its effects on nerve cells. GABA receptors are located in specific areas of the brain, which helps to regulate brain function. The muscles of the spinal cord can become inflamed and damaged. Baclofen works by blocking the effects of these receptors and increasing the amount of nerve activity in the spinal cord.
